It is a rockin' good buffet at the old prices and a huge steal at the new prices (provided that they didn't drop the quality). The ambiance is lovely, the food terrific (homemade gelato! Ten flavors!!), and the servers unobtrusive, but quick....

There are many good buffets in Reno/Tahoe, but the Eldorado's is a must visit each trip. Those are great prices.

In May I visited a few downtown Las Vegas casino buffets and not one of them, except perhaps the Main Street Station, measured up to a typical Reno buffet.

John as to your rhetorical question...

It's been several decades since I was in the Army...but one lingering side effect that haunts me to this day.....

It might be good chow, maybe even great chow, but it's still A CHOW LINE!! And I HATE CHOW LINES !!

I'd rather sit at the counter for my cheapo breakfast at the Cal Neva where I order from a menu, get a coffee & a plate of food brought to me...than the best CHOW LINE!

But that's just me... besides, it's cheap and they appreciate the business.

...or maybe some other guys as well.

Edited to add:

And WHAT'S THE DEAL with making you get stand in line (behind those knee high ankle biters and touchey all the chow walking snot bags) for your chow...but making you "order" for drinks and then a check just like a real restaurant? The day I leave a tip at a barfett...just put a bullet in my eye.

Chow lines, hehe. My dear mother hates buffets and calls them "food troughs".

Ok, my "beef" with the buffet concept?

Here is a reminder and request to many, many, many buffet diners I saw during our trip in August:

You CAN go back for more and use new plates. They are not going to take the food away and I assure you there is more in the back. It is NOT necessary to pile your entire %$#@* plate sky-high with only crab or whatever the hell you are eating. Also, one plate at a time rather than 5 and 6 plates 4-stories tall with a single item would be appreciated. Leave some for us and go back for seconds. Really, it's ok. I promise.

Ugh. I always ask for a table away from the "food trough" as someone noted.

Oh, and if YOU are one of those who do the single item pile up.....sorry for the rant, but knock it off.

Kisses to you all.

I am one with serious "food touching" issues. I deal with it by taking one plate with moderate quantities of one or two items (and using Zydeco's "always more" theory) and repeat until full.

I seriously feel ill sometimes watching (as Cousin Eddie in "Vegas Vacation" says...) "It's all you can eat. You only need one plate". I never understood why somebody would want to have (and then eat) jello, beef and gravy, and spaghetti on the same plate.

Zydeco does not mention if there is a "food touching" affliction. But as one who has it, I thank you for your advocacy, and hope it gains traction.

But Zydeco & MJames, don't you realize that the more time you spend having to walk back and forth to the buffet, that's less time you get to spend cramming in the food? Plus, you don't want to walk off too many of those precious calories... <grin>

Seriously, though, "white space" on your plate is a good thing.

Lily, although your comment...

is offered in jest, I suspect that you've actually given us an important insight into some people's thinking.

I'll admit, that in my younger days, I would simply pile on more food as I got caught up in the enthusiasm for all that delicious looking food.

MJames: Food touching issues? You bet!

LilyD: I think you are right about not wanting to waste precious time and energy...seriously for some. Seriously.

BC Dave: Ok, I am in the same boat with you. I want to grab so many things because they all look so good (Wynn Las Vegas buffet is an excellent example, yow-za!). BUT I think it is different from the person who sits in front of the crab (the usual culprit) and just piles it on..two plates sometimes! Some of it falls off (sorry for the visual MJames) and they just grab more and more. It's almost like hoarding. Disturbing. As I said, "knock it off, there is more in the back!"

Oy, did I get fired up about this issue. Ha ha! Several of my Reno crew had dinner (nice place, single plate brought to us) last night and we laughed our asses off talking about the buffet experience!

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

JD is on the money, as always: "Barfett"? Eh, I could quibble with the spelling, but that's both perfect and hilarious.

And drink "service" with a big spot on the bill for you to add a "tip"? It's SELF-SERVE, that's the whole dang concept! Methinks the restaurant is making a tidy killing on people who think they're supposed to tip at a buffet!

BCDave: Don't forget the best use of all of that classic Homer Simpson line, in the one where they were spoofing "The Shining": Homer is locked in the pantry due to his killing impulses as Jack was in the original. The voice of Moe is heard saying, "Uh, Homer - the other ghouls and I are getting a bit concerned that the project isn't moving forward.", to which Homer responds:

"Cant murder now - eating."

Zydeco and all: You're all correct: Buffets are, in the end, germ-generation laboratories, where we are the unsuspecting hosts!

You never can tell where a thread might lead.

And I am ready to take this one to a whole new level since Stan has introduced Homer Simpson into the mix.

Because I live in S.W. Portland, about three miles from where Matt Groenig grew up.

The "shining" (both Nickelson & Simpson) used Timberline Lodge (about 40 miles East of Portland) as a location.

And Matt's real life Father's name was Homer, Mother/Marge(Wiggum), Grandpa/Abe, and "Mark" his brother...was the model for "Bart".

Many of the characters (Flanders, Lovejoy, Terwilliger ) were named after streets in S.W. Portland. Krusty was modeled after "Rusty Nails, the Clown" a local TV host in the late 1950's/early 60's.

Now none of this has anything to do with Reno...but it should.

Mmmm.... pointy. -- One of my favorite Homer lines which he uttered upon eating the wedding cake topper of a cake.

Another: I used to rock and roll all night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.

Thanks again, JD - as a big-time Simpsons fan, I recalled distantly some of that trivia regarding Portland, OR that you cited, but had forgotten that so many of our fine visitreno.com brethren do indeed hail from the region - what a treat! One of these days, I'm going to head up to that town just to take pictures of street signs with names like "Flanders" and "Lovejoy!"

And that "Rusty the clown" history page was equally fascinating.

In a final celebratory move, let us all tip back our chairs, as Homer did, and say: "Mmmm.....slanty!"
