The Nevada Tax Commission has long been planning some sort of sales tax on comped meals. This is the first I've heard of it. Frankly it makes me sick.

And, quoting the RGJ article, how's this for government efficiency, "The department said earlier this year it would begin imposing sales tax on comped meals as of Feb. 15 and assess a 25 percent penalty as well as 9 percent annual interest on all taxes not paid by July 31. The agency, however, is still trying to adopt regulations on how to collect the sales tax."

If I were the casino owners of Nevada I'd lock the front doors of my establishments until the Tax Commission backs off and eats an uncomped humble pie! Who is John Galt?

Insane! I'm guessing the 25% + 9% penalty costs apply to the total food bill(s)? I can only imagine the IRS calling me up one day going, "Your fried chicken tax is due and payable!"

If I were the casino owner stuck with this concept, I would start charging comps 91 cents per check - no matter how expensive the meal or number of people. Then it's not a comped meal and thus the State can get their nine cents in sales tax. Give the 91 cents back in free play to the person charged and thus they still get a comped meal...

I'm with you so far Lily. And I don't want to give them any ideas, but what happens when they decide to tax freeplay?
