What is a nice one day roundtrip from Reno on Amtrak? Is that what you're asking?
Given the Zephyr's schedule, probably Auburn and back is as good as it gets. Maybe just Truckee though. |

Many years ago, I used to take the train to Truckee in early December with 8 women from work and about 30 of their friends for a Christmas shopping spree. Of course, it was a Christmas drinking spree for me. The view out the window was breathtaking with the snow decorating the banks of the Truckee River. The view inside the train was also breathtaking.
Since the west bound train starts in Chicago, the it's always late by the time it gets to Reno - sometimes as much as eight hours late. Coming back, it's almost always on time since it leaves from the bay area. According to Amtrak's website, tickets are less than $20 each way. It used to be about $60 round trip.
If you've never been to Truckee, you'll enjoy the historic part of town, which is where the train station is located. It's full of quaint, overpriced, little shops and pretty good restaurants.
Have fun and send us a trip report. |
