...because as of next Tuesday, August 14, I'm officially going to be Reno local! I was going to try to stick out the move until the end of the month, but on top of all the other madness going on in these parts, my apartment building here just got condemned (yes, on top of being foreclosed!), and Mono County officials are going to drop by on Monday with a 24 hour notice for us 3 remaining tenants to vacate the premises. Fortunately, our dirtbag landlord has offered to move myself, all my belongings, and my dog to Reno at no cost for compensation - I'm hoping he'll keep his word, as this is only going to be more $$ saved for me. I'm putting all my stuff in storage (CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND ANY GOOD PLACES IN THE SOUTH VIRGINIA STREET AREA?) and for the moment, my German Shepherd and I are starting out at the GSR, followed by Harrah's, and will probably be alternating between those two for the next, uh, 165 days or so! Might have a couple of visits elsewhere in between depending on their wait times in between visits.
Lily - thanks so much for the info about the studios at the Cal Neva. I think I might check it out there if need be before I mosey down the street to the Silver Dollar Motor Lodge, the 777 Motel, and some of these other pay-by-the-week-and-month places I've been calling. I did try calling a couple of bonafide apartment complexes in South Reno, but like the case has been here in Mammoth since I got the layoff call in March: I've got savings, an 815 credit score, excellent references and rental history, no evictions, currently have the ability to pay for a six month lease in full before moving in, and yet I'm still being treated like a criminal and denied because I'm on unemployment! Gotta do what you gotta do. Something is telling me we'll fit right in downtown. I love it!
So, the adventure begins! HAIL COMPS - I'D BE SO SCREWED WITHOUT YOU RIGHT NOW!

Unfortunately the cheapest places are usually in the roughest parts of town.
I helped a buddy move from Portland (DJ at Spice House) and he ended up in one of those older Motor Lodges out on 4th (777 I think) . AND he was ripped off as well. (terrible place for a dog) But it WAS fun visiting him at his work !!
As John explained, I would NOT be in a hurry to tell the casinos you are now a local. Make sure you register for all the casino's E- newsletters for offers and freeplay (Gold Dust West is a good one for locals w/ cheap eats). AND you're going to want to throttle back on your gaming if you want your bankroll to last.
I've been looking for a place (to BUY) myself near UNR and I;ll be in town in a few weeks to go house shopping again. Send me a private message and we'll set up a meet at SIENA with John where I (almost said WE) can blow my $150 free play. I think he has $ 10 coming.
John knows how to get in touch with me. You have lots of snowboards but NO CAR? THAT'S going to cramp your style.
Keep in touch

will do JD, thanks and best of luck on the house hunt! Yes, those places on 4th and even on Virginia once downtown starts are only going to be a last resort. On top of that, just about every one of them I've called is not only full, but has a waiting list. To keep things simple, I think we're going to jump in at the Motel 6 on the corner of Plumb and Virginia, next to the Pep and El Pollo Loco, on those random days I can't get a comp honored - it's 100% remodeled, dog friendly and I actually have a discount card with them thanks to all my surf trips down south. And oh yeah, staying in control is going to be crucial with the bankroll - good thing my "deposit funds on a prepaid debit card and throw it away" plan hasn't failed me yet! I completely forgot about the Gold Dust West. I stayed overnight there WAY back in the day, like in 2005. I recall walking from there to the Sands Regency at about 2:30 in the morning, uh, not knowing the area too well - that was an eye-opener for sure. I'm thinking about just setting up a PO Box at the branch downtown and having all my mail forwarded to it, maybe waiting a little while before I start letting the casinos know.
Oh yeah, that's me - no job, no car, no apartment, no lease, no children, no significant other, just a bunch of boards! I love my life!
Talk soon! |

Good luck to you Mammoth (or whatever your new name may be). I am sure this has got to be a little scary for you.
To get around that "umemployed" answer to employee spot on the applications...... try this- Put down, Harrah's Blazing 7's. |
