The two greatest things in my life are zombies and Reno. A few weeks ago I found out they were combined into a comic series. Then a film was based on it.
The comic and film titled "Remains". If you have netflix it's available via their streaming option and dvd. I haven't read the 5 episode comic but I watched the film and I can safely say it's the "Reno" version of film with a budget of $750K and some horrible acting.
The film takes place in Reno and mainly focused in the "Silver Star". They keep reusing stock footage of the Cal Neva garage structure but they edited out "Cal Neva" signage though they didn't edit out "Reno's Best Bet" sign. They also reuse stock footage of the alleyway by Commrow/Fitz. The movie isn't filmed on location, they don't even use the real name of the casinos and the film quality is slightly above a community college production.
But if you have netflix and consider the movie is mostly a slapstick comedy/horror movie and have very low expectations you'll enjoy it.
PLEASE PLEASE, someone watch the movie and write about what you think of it! I'm dying to know if I'm the only person who enjoyed the movie.
A quick read of the comic

Note that the comic centers around a waitress/stripper and a blackjack dealer. In the movie it is based on a waitress/drug user and her drug dealer/washed up magician.

A romantic comedy with Billy Bob Thornton, Charlize Theron and Patrick Swayze that has a scene in the Cal Neva! Woo hoo! I'm going to see it! |

I have NOT seen "El Cortez" filmed in Reno... BUT I will show you a TR from 2006 where I mentioned I nearly ran over Lou Diamond Phillips:

How I nearly killed Lou Diamond Phillips:
One evening while driving in front of the old Comstock, a nerdy looking guy in a bowtie nearly pushed an old man into the street diretly in front of me. There were so many people standing around, I thought the El Cortez had become the new feeding station for the down and outers. It wasn't until the next day I see the Reno Gazette Urnial with a photo of:

‘Devil' shot in Reno

Locals volunteer to be extras in film starring Lou Diamond Phillips, James McDaniel and Bruce Weitz By Forrest Hartman RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL For the past week, Reno has been a backdrop for dangerous characters and shady dealings. And, if all goes well, they'll be coming soon to a theater near you. Since Sunday, a film crew from Brazos Productions has been camped at the Atlantis, El Cortez Hotel and other Reno locales to film an independent thriller starring Lou Diamond

Hummm... "Reno...dangerous characters, shady dealings..." not the Reno I know.
Lets see, before I was sidetracked, seems to me I had to make the 12:00 checkout from the Siena. Arising before noon has now become quite a chore for a guy who's alarm usually goes off before 3:15 am.
Back to Virginia City where the characters don't have to act.

Nice JD! Wait.. are you at Siena right now!!?!?!!?!?
On another note, have you been to Chinook Winds or Spirit Mountain in Oregon? I've stayed/played at both and like them. The Chnook gaming floor is small but I love that the hotel is right on the beach making for some great runs/walks on the beach. |

No, dfens... that "Siena" reference was a cut and paste from 2004. Sorry I highjacked the thread to include "ANY movie shot in Reno"... it's gotta me a lot.
And I have been to both. Spirit Mountain also purges points without warning. I too, prefer Chinook winds over Spirit Mtn. Both LOOK like casinos, but without free drinks. When Chinook first opened, it was in an inflatable tent and managed by Reno's COMSTOCK people.
MUCH better location on the beach. Huey Lewis plays there nearly every year. |
