Just had a look at the Virginia Street Webcam. (View here) With Siri's sign twinkling and the Whitney Peak Hotel all lit up, it looks like the long awaited revival may be under-way. Any impressions from those of you a little closer to the action than me?
Any of you agree that a hard working moderator like me, should have an all expenses paid (or at least tax deductable) trip to Reno every couple of months so he could keep up with all the goings on?
Hey Boss! Wake up! Start getting ready for Street Vibrations. Man, the never ending job of a moderator! |

Hrmph; didn't you get that salary check John sent??
Oh, wait, that's right - the postal service had to cash the check to cover the cost of the first-class postage.... |

Uhhh, Dave, Stan is right about the postage. The post office applied your pay check toward the postage cost and billed me for the balance. Now for the good news ~ your year end bonus hasn't gone down. It will be the same as last year! Now quit whining and get to work. |

We were there in July and the hotel was really looking good, and
Siri's was looking good but I thought it was kinda tight quarters, a
lot of machines in a small space. I read that Cal Neva has a new
restaurant down stairs in the east building, any one tried it yet?? |

Things are looking up for the city as a whole if the early reports are correct that Tesla has chosen Reno for its battery gigafactory. Official word is expected tomorrow. Once in full operation the plant is predicted to bring $4 to $5 billion in investments and create 6,500 new jobs. That's not so interesting to visitors but it sure could bring a whole lot more people to Virginia Street. More:

BC Dave mentioned Siri's casino and Whitney Peak, both of which are filling voids in the downtown corridor. We had dinner recently at Heritage, the restaurant at Whitney Peak, and were very satisfied. The menu is small (one steak selection, one pork, duck, two seafood choices - you can find it online) but the food was very well prepared with tasty spices and sauces. Not your typical restaurant fare. Prices were generally $20 to $30 per entree, salads and sides extra. Our bill for two was about $100. Then we checked out Siri's which only had slots, the sports book and a snack bar, no live music as of yet. Gambling was average and the layout of machines seems crowded and confusing. It didn't seem as busy as the other places downtown but its still a lot better than an empty storefront.
Also at Whitney Peak, the local PBS station is going to produce a series of original live music shows originating from Whitney Peak's Cargo showroom, featuring local and indie groups. It's billed as sort of an updated "Austin City Limits." Here's more:

Up the street, at N. Virginia and W. First Street (across from City Hall) the new owner of the former Woolworth's building has announced plans for a 6 lane bowling alley, restaurant and bar to open in the basement level in a couple months. As a non-bowler this doesn't really interest me but it does add another downtown activity for the casual visitor as the bowling stadium is reserved for tournaments only, and it might allow tournament players more practice opportunities while in town. The owner still has plans for a grocery outlet on the main floor. At the other end of the block, Mark Estee, the man behind Campo, Burger Me, Heritage and other restaurants has announced plans to open a grocery, butcher shop and general store in the old Penney's building, to be called Provisions. Details:

Finally, work continues on the old post office across the river, next to the Pioneer Center. Although the activity seems slow but sure, I haven't heard anything about a projected opening date or possible business tenants once it opens. The developers also own the new Sticks development a few blocks away which still has several vacant spots, so I suppose they are temporarily in a supply and demand bind (too many openings, not enough tenants). That should (hopefully) work itself out as they get closer to opening. |

Thanks for the detailed reply, Remano. The Tesla deal, if it pans out, will be a huge jackpot for Reno. It certainly would bring lots more people to Virginia Street. If it does, anybody with a storefront along that stretch of road should be in an enviable position. |

Actually, competitive bowlers would avoid it like the plague.
Without going into the very long and involved story, competitive league and tournament bowling is on a drastic decline. Many, many bowling centers across the country are converting to various forms of "party" centers... DJs or oonce-oonce music, spinning lights, videos, etc., with separate walled off VIP areas with couches, bottle service, etc. That segment of the bowling industry is taking off like gangbusters.
My guess is that a 6-lane project in downtown of a tourist area would be very specifically targeted for that dancy-clubby tourist who doesn't mind spending $7 per game, $4 for shoe rental, and $10 for Captain-N-Cokes.
Did I give away my stance, yet? |

Hey BCDMod, here are a few shots of Siri's and Heritage for you, since Google Earth doesn't know they exist yet.

Thanks Boss, for bringing me visually up to date. Siri's looks kinds minimalist - minimal expense for design, paint, etc. And Heritage looks ... OK. I can imagine it all looking a lot better - somehow. But, I am an ingrate. At least they are open! |
