For some reason I kind of like this place and I am not sure why. I have stopped by for a quick visit on my way into town my last three Reno trips. I usually just play some video poker for about thirty minutes, swipe my card to see what comes up and then on to my real destination. Last year on one of my quick stops I hit a royal flush for a grand. So far this year my three stops have all resulted in a positive result for me. In addition to my Sands stop, I usually stop at their sister property- Gold Ranch to get their $3.99 pancake breakfast. It is really good. I always earmark $20 to play in their machines, as I know they lose money on that cheap meal. Well, the last three stops there have also resulted in a positive result for me. Just Luck.
I brought my wife with me on my last visit to the Sands and I don't think she was impressed. I ended up getting two T-shirts and some free play when I swiped my card. We had lunch at the little Mexican Food place. It was sure cheap and not too bad.
Well, I would think that they must really hate me as they make no money on me! Yesterday I received an offer from them in the mail. Two free nights, dining discount and some free play.
The Sands must be the easiest place to get mail offers from Reno. |

As I've noted before (probably ad nauseum), I have a soft spot for the Sands. I've read many poor reviews of the old place - which is sad. I'm kinda amazed they're still going - amazed but very glad!
I regards to your lucky streak there and your repeated invitations to return ... Beware! (I'm sure you know that). |

And don't forget the Copa Restaurant. When you swipe your card, odds are good you'll get either a BOGO or a freebie at Copa. The prime rib is a good deal.
My only beef with the Sands is the other customers. But they probably say the same thing about ME. |

Sands does hold a type of charm similar to what one gets at Cal-Neva - what's the main difference, though?
Fewer changes at Cal-Neva!...and that's what I look for in a haunt...but Sands was a great place to include when learning how to carouse in Reno...gotta cut one's teeth at the likes of the Sands, dontcha know - and when I wasn't playing all-night cheapskate Blackjack at the Sundowner, I did so at the Sands. They had good rules, low limits, and weren't constantly jam-packed...I spent hours on those tables, and I even recall saying at one point, "Man, I could just do this forever!" - how the casino bosses and the Devil himself would have smiled to hear that statement!
I remember being up there one time with a buddy for the weekend; Sunday we had another blackjack session before heading home - I had ten beers before we hit the road, and yet I was thinking, "gee, I don't feel anything" - that really told me just what my consumption/tolerance levels were up to - good times!
Not that such behavior is healthy or recommended - stay in school, kids! - but these were points along a very enjoyable period of Reno bacchanal on a regular basis! |

My guess, Swede, is they would like you a lot if they knew you were promoting their property as what may be the best place to win in Reno. |

Thanks for the interesting responses and experiences. John, I am not ready to proclaim they are best place to win in Reno. It can all change quickly. spdmrcht- you may have gotten more sleep in the car, but the odds are high you might have gotten rolled in that part of town.
I think I will try another casino to write about. |

That's what I was concerned about in my Room. Had some drunk out in the hall banging on doors wanting in. His G/F locked him out. I called Security
Twice, they never did come up. He finely passed out in the hall. and was
still there when I left in the am. |

I made a quick trip to Reno yesterday and stopped in at the Sands. I had $10 in free play and gave it a try. Once again, I played about 45 minutes on video poker. I hit 4 four of a kinds and a straight flush. I was up $70 and left. The streak continues. |

I stopped in at the Sands on Wednesday afternoon to see if I could once again take home some of their money. This time the Sands came out on top. My winning streak at the Sands has ended. |

Well, it was worth a shot!
Any changes, or things noteworthy? |

Sorry I did not see this earlier. No changes other than I think they washed the front window. I don't think I have seen any changes at the Sands since my visit 10 years ago other than a new name for the coffee shop. |

A window washing is indeed news.
Gotta admire the minimal approach to change they've employed...one round of new owners/new decor or so - what was that, like, a decade ago? - but not a whole lot else. |

Since my recent fallout with Atlantis (I just received TODAY an Atlantis offer for 3 days from now), I've been re assessing the credibility of offers from various casino/hotels.
This is MY take on the Sands.
Pluses:
1. I really like COPA (former site of a Tony Romas). It seems I usually get a BOGO when I swipe my card. Also the Buffet and a Mel's.
2. Bartender CJ is friendly, longtime member of the $ 2 bill club. 3rd St Bar (far right end of the bar) is a great place to recharge anything.
3. Never a problem parking
4. Best outdoor pool with lots of UNR babes.
5. Live music on weekends
6. They HONOR their offers....so far and do not charge any resort fee.
Minus:
1. Their customers. Last trip it was eight buses of Mexican Amway Convention. Previously some of the same characters found at Cal Neva.
2. Air Quality. I'm afraid no amount of carpet cleaning will ever get the cigarette smoke outta the carpeting.
3. Once in a while, noise.
4. The walk to Virginia Street can be dicey. But with those new Condos going in on 3rd..... might be better lighting. Never had any issue...yet.
All in all... it's getting so I have few choices. The Atlantis is STILL dead to me. |
