The city council just approved a measure to allow the Puck Club to bring a minor league professional hockey team to the downtown events center (an affiliate of the East Coast Hockey League - ECHL - which had a team in Las Vegas but won't now that the NHL is moving in).
I think this is a good idea, bringing more activity to downtown, especially to the under-used events center, more things to see and do along with the casino scene. But then, I am a long time hockey fan, coming from a part of the country where hockey is king, where kids who were all conference high school football players in their junior year skipped football as seniors because they didn't want to risk an injury that would ruin their senior hockey season.
So, what to name this new team? My vote is for the "Drifters." You already see plenty of them around the downtown events center, why not make it official? Any other suggestions? |

Just curious Remano - if you don't mind me asking - What part of the country did you come from? We Canucks used to think that most of the US wasn't much interested in hockey. I was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs back in the sixties. Once the expansions began I lost more or less lost interest in pro hockey. I did go see Gretsky play a couple of times when the Edmonton Oilers came to Vancouver.
To get back on topic - It's great to hear there'll be hockey in downtown Reno. Attending would be a good diversion from video poker etc. A name for the team? Hmmmm ... Reno Arches? The Wild Cards? |

Arches might not work since the Aces (baseball team) mascot is already called "Archie." "Wild Cards" might work or how about "Double Downs"?
To answer your other question, Northern Minnesota, north of Duluth. Our kids played against Thunder Bay teams, other northern midwest teams. I was a Pee Wee coach when our kids played against a Cloquet MN team including Jamie Langenbrunner (playing up for his age, and we had no idea who he would become) and we won, wish I still had the scorebook from that one (not because it said anything about the game, just because it would have included his name written in by the other coach). |

Well I'm going get flack from this but I couldn't care less about Hockey or Socker. I'n not into violent contact sports, including Pro Foot ball. I love baseball and a bunch of other sports. But people getting hurt for Money doesn't get my interest at all. |

OK, so you were practically at the Canadian border. Certainly close enough to the "Great White North" to get the spillover effects of it's national sport and it's winter weather. I skated on ponds for years as a kid and got to be pretty good. When I finally skated at an ice rink in Victoria, I was sliding all over the place. (I didn't know you were supposed to have the damn things sharpened!)
Good story about beating the Langenbrunner team. |

I'm with you on sports like boxing, MMA etc., where the intent is to injure your opponent so badly that he/she can't continue. I disagree for other sports, where injury is a possibility (even likelihood) but not the intended goal of the game.
If injury is the deciding factor, then don't watch golf (how many surgeries has Tiger Woods had so far?) or bowling (mjames can tell you about those nasty carpal tunnel injuries), swimming (drowning is always possible but those ear infections from the water are inescapable), marathon running (hamstrings, anyone?) or any other physical competition. I'll continue to watch because it's entertaining, and because nobody is forcing those players to compete. They can tear up the check and walk away anytime they choose. |

I completely agree with Remano's points on this one. But, IMHO, hockey ought to be played without the contact that has become so widely accepted. I really think that body checks - basically ramming into an opposing team member to stop him or her is the opposite of skill. I played some pick-up hockey and lots of floor hockey. We always did our best not to do anything that might injure other players. (We all had to work the next day!) |
