|
|
Hi all,
Hubby and I will be in Reno on Thursday. I would like to know if the downtown area is open or if there are any detours due to road work? Last time we had to drive around in circles trying to get into the Fitz parking garage.
Thanks in advance! |

Talk about a timely question!! Today marks the first time in months that I was able to drive the length of Virginia Street downtown, under the famous arch and past the liquor store it is named for.
There are still pockets of construction but the traffic lanes are open. This marks the end of major street operations downtown and the last throes, if you will, of renovation projects. There is nothing left to finish except:
The aforementioned final touches to Virginia Street;
The plaza over the train trench;
The ballroom and kitchen annex for the events center;
Moving the bus plaza;
The Palladio building;
The Montage condos;
The Belvedere condos;
Reopening the Golden Phoenix;
Demolishing the Mizpah (supposed to start today);
The Arlington Street bridge project;
The Virginia Street bridge project;
The canopy, stage and retail buildings for the Mapes site;
Renovating the Woolworths and Penney's buildings;
Doing something with Old Reno Casino and that building next to it;
Finding occupants for several vacant store fronts.
What did I miss?

When I was there a couple of weeks ago, it looked like it'll now be only one lane in each direction, which will choke the traffic more than ever. A silly change in my opinion. How bad was the traffic?

That's right. One lane in each direction, with a left turn lane in the middle. The intent was to encourage more drivers to use Center Street (one way North) and Sierra (one way South). With the one way's they can coordinate the lights better and keep traffic moving more smoothly. |
