Yesterday the city council adopted a very complicated proposal, involving about a dozen side agreements for land swaps and other incentives, for the creation of a triple A baseball stadium downtown. The area involved will be basically from the back of the bowling stadium to the river, then east for about 8 to 10 blocks. One of the owners involved is the Simon Group, one of the biggest mall developers in the country and owner of the Meadowood Mall in Reno, and they are promising to bring a retail/restaurant/entertainment development to downtown to compliment the stadium. That should be good for the whole area, if it happens.
One thing I don't like is replacing the bus plaza in front of the bowling stadium with retail space. I think it's a good idea to move the bus plaza, but I think they should consolidate that with the properties fronting Virginia Street, and take them down, to build a new casino across from the Eldorado so Virginia Street downtown would be solid casinos on both sides. If I had about a billion dollars I would do that, or if somebody here would like to send me a few hundred mil I would get it started. |

No problem, Remano. Just send me a detailed expense estimate in triplicate and notarized and I'll send you a voucher.
Sound familiar, Ali??? |

So is there a triple A team lined up yet?
Would be cool if they could steal the 51's from vegas. They have been wanting a new stadium for years now, Cashman field is in the ghetto, and no one goes to any of the games in July and August cause its 120 degrees outside |

A triple A team? I guess the idea is === If we build a stadium they will come. The plan is to steal a team from another city. I remember reading about this some time ago. Here is a website, but they state they will be ready to play in 2006, and they were going to build in Sparks.

I remember going to a game back in the 60's. Reno silver sox (?) played the Modesto Colts. This was A ball. My family and the other 39 people enjoyed the game. As I remember the stadium was way south on Virginia St. ???, and was made with green painted wood.
Does Reno have a team anymore? |

CaSwede,
I think that stadium is still there (on Moana ?) and you can see it from the Pep rooms on that side. |

Correct-O-Mundo. The stadium is on Moana, about two blocks west of South Virginia Street. The Silver Sox are also still in Reno, but I think now they play at Peccoli Park (UNR campus) instead of the Moana stadium.
The promoters of the triple A team have bought the Tucson Sidewinders to move to Reno. The paper has invited readers to suggest names for the team. Someone submitted "Reno Hookers," which I don't think will make the final list. "Reno Sparks" has also been suggested, which is my favorite so far. They originally proposed a stadium in Sparks as part of the Legends project, but the local homeowners shot it down. The casino/shopping mall was already too much for them. |

Yes, that is it- on Moana Lane just off south Virginia. At that time that was way south on Virginia Street. You were really out in the country past Moana Lane in the early 60's. Geez..... I must be getting old. |

Here's a link to the on-line version of the team-naming story:

We can all send our ideas to: tips@rgj.com
I rather like the suggestion "Reno Pogonips", though "Reno Transients" is also good.

Swede, If they name it the Visitreno.com guys, it's doomed. This is such a lame board, after all.
Jerry, if they want to earn the "Shooters" name, they'll have to stay drunk, get in fights and be arrested. The team will always be short a few players |

I think VisitReno should pay 5 million a year for naming rights to the new stadium
just think of all the traffic it will bring in |
