There was an update on the Fitzgerald's situation in this morning's RGJ.

http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071017/BIZ04/710170408/1071

Robert Cashell, the mayor's son, goes before the Gaming Commission Thursday for final approval of his license to operate it. He already holds licenses for the Alamo in Sparks and the Topaz Lodge so approval is expected to go smoothly. Then the remodeling can begin in earnest, apparently starting with a new elevator and upgrades to the parking garage.

One of the other owners, Fernando Leal, is featured on a web site that tracks the downtown developments. The author, who interviewed Leal, says there is a major announcement about Fitzgerald's coming in the near future that will knock your socks off, but he is pledged to secrecy until Leal thinks the time is right. Here's the link:

Thanks Remano for as usual keeping us up on what's going on in Reno.
Just as long as they keep Fitzgerald as a Casino, I'll be tickled. It is a fun place and a great location.
You think Cabella's will open on time?
Thanks again,
Dave

I saw on the news last night that the gaming commission approved the license and Cashell plans to several million into the place. I don't know what that will buy other than some paint and carpet cleaning. I think they mentioned replacing the elevator or escalator. Then the plan is do do a study on the cost of renovating the rooms

De nada....I think they'll make it in time for the Christmas rush. They claim to be open by November 16. Boomtown is offering its players club members free Cabela's gift certificates. Show up any Friday or Saturday in October with a coupon and your players card and pick one up, guaranteed to be worth at least $10 up to $1,000.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Cabela's. They don't offer anything that isn't already available at existing stores, yet they expect a big tax break everywhere they go, giving them a government subsidized competitive advantage. They've got to be one of the biggest welfare recipients in the city.

But, to be "fair and balanced," here's their side of the story:

Thanks for the info on the Fitz. I always like to keep up with what they are planning to do. They really need an update and I hope that they stay open and make some good changes. Very Happy Barb

I agree, Barb, it is scuzzy and I would like to play there. I enjoyed it a lot more when I could go in and hear some really good Irish music.
They have pretty much lost me by eliminating the last of the video poker machines with decent pay table\s.

They have a poor drink selection but the service is good. Smile

they need a lot of upgrading in a lot of areas.
One thing I'd like is to be able to park my own car and feel it was reasonably safe - both me and the car.

So, I'd like to see them connect their parking to their casino with a nice bright wide walkway over Virginia St.
The second option would be a DIFFERENT parking situation. They own the old Golden Phoenix and already have a walkway over Sierra(?) St.

I guess that means they own the little piece of former casino (now closed) on Virginia St that belonged to Flamingo. Could they close the alley and connect those - I doubt it. But that could make it a nice setup.

Just some wild random thoughts to BUMP-BUMP-BUMP the board as we said in the other thread.

You're right about the parking. I usually use the valet when I go there. The couple bucks tip is well worth it.

The newspaper article did say upgrading the parking garage was one of the first projects planned. I doubt that it will include an elevated walkway, however. To go directly to the casino it would have to cross diagonally over an intersection and the Reno arch. It might be possible to connect with the former "Rainbow Bridge" over the tracks to make an "L" shaped walkway, but that has been stripped down to a roofless shell and looks like it's in the final stages of demolition. Besides, the walkway would block the view of the arch and I don't think the neighbors would approve of that.

The Golden Phoenix walkway over Sierra St. was the first thing to go as part of the condo conversion. I haven't heard anything about the building fronting on Virginia St. It still has the sign advising to watch for the expanded casino and food court opening "next summer." That's been there since last year so next summer has come and gone with no apparent change in the building. Maybe that's a part of the "big announcement" Fitzgerald's new owners are promising. Hope so, because that block needs a few more occupants.

I can't believe I agree with Jerry.

Nothing I like less than HAVING to use valet parking. Not only have I heard MANY horror stories of damage to a car, but often stuff turns up missing but you can prove NOTHING! Before I turn my car (and everything in it) over to some guy with a name tag that says, "Jose", I want his complete credit report, SSAN and next of kin.

I will park on the street before I use valet parking...or go to another casino.

Oh ya, when I want to leave, I want to leave NOW...not wait until someone comes off break, finds the keys, may or may not be able to find the right car.

AND ANOTHER THING...one of my running gags (funny only to me) when I am FORCED to use valet, I ALWAYS spot the fancy Porsche and say, "...mine is that red Porsche..." About half the time they are ready to give it to me.

AND ANOTHER THING : (which should be a new thread): Jerry: Check out Santiam Pass this Saturday Morning:

Hey, JD, it takes a big man to open his mind to learning new things. Twisted Evil

JD wrote further: "Jerry: Check out Santiam Pass this Saturday Morning"

Now this one I have no clue about. Sat morn has come and gone. Next saturday, I'll be somewhere on the road I think. No computer access.
But why would I get out of my warm bed to watch a video camera displaying a lonely, snowy mountain pass. If I am supposed to see you enroute, I don't think I'd recognize your vehicle. Heck, with my eyesight at my age, I do well to recognize you when we are ensconced on adjoining barstools.

Keep cool if traversing Santiam Pass.

I noticed today that there are barricades around the rainbow bridge, a couple pieces of heavy equipment and lots of guys in hard hats. I would say the end is near.

That's what Fitzgerald's called their overpass over the railroad right of way. Now that the trench is done and the trains are below grade they don't need it anymore.

If you look at the photo of the Reno Arch on Visitreno's home page, you can see it to the left of the arch.

Another concern: Will the Lucky Forest continue to hand out those free dollar coins to club members who are guests of other hotels?

As a professional cheapskate, that dollar is a valuable attraction, and one I always utilize when in town - in fact, last time, it made me money!

Here's hoping they keep it...
