Hey guys. Wow we have joked around about the board being a little quiet once in a while but man alive!
Getting closer to coming down and I can't wait. I do have a question though for the regulars as we all have one thing in common- we love Reno. Strange as that may seem to some they can have the Indian Casinos and Vegas for that matter so my question is are things looking up in Reno? I know that we just lost the Golden Phoenix but with the trench being close to complete is tourism picking up? Did the City ever listen to the complaints about people not feeling safe in some areas downtown? (PLEASE don't depress me and talk about all of my old favorite places that are now shut down! )
I can't wait to see for myself in a few weeks but I was hoping to hear from some of you! Take care,
Dave |

Wish I had better news, but I was in Reno on a non-event, non-holiday weekend. All the larger casinos seemed to have some decent patronage, but Circus and the Sands were dead dead dead. Cal Neva was not particularly busy either. I'd put both of those (Sands and Circus) on the death watch list.... or at least a major reconfiguration. My guess is more contraction is emminent in the dowtown area. Didn't make it out to Pep/Atlantis. Was pleasantly surprised at how busy Siena was. Seems they've found their niche, at least to some degree. Several folks commented on how tight the machines were all over town, however I played less than $20 in VP/slots so I can't speak to that.
It does not appear that the casinos paid one bit of notice to the complaints of visitors. Tight machines, lots of homeless folks, and the main drag is an eyesore. |

Thanks for the response Irish. Yeah so tough to figure out that some people are confident enough in downtown to turn a few old casinos into fancy condos when there is still some trouble cleaning things up. I am going to choose to be the eternal optimist and I think that several of these Casinos will adjust and do well. I am aware there are problems in Reno but I really love the atmosphere and it still has a lot to offer. I will take good old Reno any day!

Dave,
Don't get me wrong. I love Reno. But I go there for far different reasons than most. I go there strictly to gamble. I don't care about the food, or entertainment or for hotel ammenities. I go solo to Reno. I have NEVER taken my better half with me to Reno, though she occasionally accompanies me to Vegas. She would hate Reno. In all actuality, Reno's demise works in my favor as I prefer empty or near empty tables and often during slow periods, the tables are understaffed.
I am surprised at the laissez-faire attitude of the casinos though. As I sit here, I have 8 offers from casinos in Vegas who would like my patronage. (some totally comped, others partially) I currently have but two offers from Reno. They're 2 fair offers, but certainly not enough for me to fight the snow in the Sierra's. |

Hey Irish,
Yeah I don't understand why they wouldn't want to get you to come back. I definitely remember your postings from long ago. I actually spent a lot of time reading about some of your memorable trips to the Craps table with some friends. I haven't been to that site for quite a while. As much as I enjoyed reading about it I don't think I could do it. I usually just bet the pass line, a couple bets on the come with max odds and let her fly hoping for the best. What a fun game.
Thanks again for your reply. Heading down in a couple of weeks and I am looking forward to it. My wife would be right along with yours as she really doesn't get too excited about Reno. I guess I more than make up for it.
Take care,
Dave |
