From the downtownmakeover.com web site summary of Reno City Council proceedings comes this news:

"A. New Gaming License - Club 241 Casino, Robert A. Cashell, Jr., 241 North Virginia Street. Hmmm very interesting indeed. This is property owned by L3 Development, and is the old casino annex of the Golden Phoenix that fronts Virginia Street. Could it be opening as something new sooner than later?"

L3 is the developer of the Montage condos and also operates Fitzgerald's. With their location they expect to be one of the major beneficiaries of the train trench plaza. If it were me, I would like to find a way to merge Fitzgerald's building with the former Phoenix front so the casinos could compliment each other, sort of like the Eldo/Legacy/Circus overpasses.

I had assumed L3 had acquired the Golden Phoenix license and wouldn't need a new one. Guess I was wrong. And what about the requirement that new licensees have to build hotel rooms? How do they get around that, unless they're only planning a bar with a few slot machines? Whatever they have planned, I hope the boards come off that eyesore real soon. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Anything new in downtown would be very welcome. You got to figure it has to have some kind of connection with the Fitz. and the location, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

I believe Robert A. Cashell, Jr. also owns Topaz lodge and casino south on hwy 395 south of Garndernville.

I wonder how long the process will be? those Montage owners have their hands full with expensive condo's in a dead housing market, I'm nervous the sale of those will drag down the expansion/remodel of their other properties.

If the desirability level of Reno ever returns to its '90's-era levels, those condo builders will look like visionary geniuses - until then, of course, everyone will just be laughing at them.

But I hope they do get the last laugh - the condo approach, while easy to mock, could provide a basis for a return to an "Upscale" downtown Reno - but I'm guessing it's going to be a while.

Yeah...R and I are looking at them, but they'd have to come down 1/2 for us to consider it.
