As some of you already know, published author and poet John Evanoff has been writing monthly articles for VisitReno for almost 4 years. He's covered most of Northern Nevada, including topics such as the history of a lot of towns, biographies of some of our more colorful and influential residents, hiking trails and the Comstock Lode. http://visitreno.com/evanoff/index.php

I met John about 5 years ago when he commissioned me to build the website for Duke's Casino, of which he was General Manager. Unfortunately, the casino unexpectedly closed on the exact day I finished the site. He contacted me a while later and generously offered to write the articles for the site, and it has been a very popular attraction ever since.

John recently informed me that he's out of ideas for the articles, having covered nearly all of the area, but is eager to continue the project if we can help spur his imagination. I've thought of suggesting the current condo boom, the history of gaming in Nevada and Tanner Oddie, the first governor of Nevada.

If there is any Northern Nevada related subject you'd like to learn more about, please post here and help keep this valuable resource alive.

How about the history on the "oldest building" in Reno. The one next to Old Reno and now owed (and purchased for $1) to the Montage people.

I'd love to see a thorough discussion of the condo boom aspect, as you suggested - that subject just cries out for an analysis from the likes of Mr. Evanoff!

How about a "Where are they now?"

Those of us that have been coming to Reno have rubbed elbows with many of the families that ran the old casinos. Granted, the first generation is now gone in many cases. But how about a story on the second and third generation? (Or maybe they'd prefer to keep their privacy).

Suggestions: Harrah, Smith, Douglass

It's a nice start, but doesn't say what it did after the mason's gave it up in 1905 (well, one sentence on a use). Maybe there's nothing there anyway, except the time capsul with the goodies?

John & John:

Just a word of mea culpa...and it's not easy.

Like so many regular readers, I usually go straight to the message board, and so often forget to occassionally go to the main visitreno.com board.

I went back and read Evanoff's past six or seven posts (I read them all when it was new), and completely enjoyed them. I fancy myself a bit of a historian and especially liked the Black Rock stories. I really want to take my SUV up there one of these trips.

Like many posters, I forget just how much good stuff is found on the main board and I know it's taken effort to keep it current.

Just a word of thanks to John & John for their efforts that we take for granted...sometimes.

My turn to buy a round.
