It has been a long time since I have posted anything to this forum, but I look almost every day. I have been coming to Reno every summer for the past 11 or 12 years in a row but I live 1536 miles away and once a year is all that I can hope for.
I try to read everything I can about Reno and northern Nevada just to keep up about new things I came across this blog by Rich Moreno called Backyard Traveler in which he picks out a different parts of Nevada's history or present day and writes about it. The following is what I found last Friday: "The grand opening of the Legends at Sparks Marina shopping/dining/entertainment mega-complex this summer puts a spotlight on the former railroad town of Sparks, which celebrates its 105th birthday next year. Legends is a $1.2 billion development that includes a hotel-casino and the region's largest shopping mall with some 50 tenants including Scheels All Sports (already open), Banana Republic factory store, Converse, Nike Factory Store, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th and other vendors. The grand opening is scheduled for June 18."
I don't recall anyone talking about the opening of a NEW CASINO. With all the talk about the Fitz closing and everything else going to hell, I would think a new thing would be news.
Or am I off base as usual? _________________ jimc |

A hotel/casino was in the plans from the very start, but with the current economy and credit market it is on hold indefinitely. There also has been talk from time to time of an indoor ice arena but no action on that either to date.
The grand opening is for the first phase of the development. Some of the stores are already open, and once the first phase is done they are talking about starting immediately on phase two which, like phase one, will be mostly retail and restaurant businesses and I think an Omnimax theater.
The developers recently held a job fair at JA's Nugget, drawing an estimated 5,000 people to apply for 700 jobs, many of which were part time evening and weekend positions. Legends estimates another 300 or so jobs coming available as more stores open throughout the summer. |

I also remember some discussion of a Station's casino way south near Mt. Rose Pkwy. Is that on hold, also?

That's on hold too, as well as another Stations plan for a casino across Virginia Street from the Convention Center. Stations is in a world of financial hurt right now, talking about bankruptcy and trying to force a debt reduction program down the throats of their bondholders and creditors. They aren't likely to be thinking about Reno for a long time. |

Thanks. I thought that might be the case.

I was at the Marina 3 weeks ago and didn't see anything except Scheels and Target and construction workers. Hard to believe a bunch of stuff is about to open up.
But, wow, Scheels is worth a visit. neat place. Stan would like this place. |
