Like Bill Murray in "What About Bob", I've imposed myself on friends in Virginia City . No points, but comps galore.
On my way thru Reno Thursday, I stopped to put a few points on my Peppermill card and have a "senior $ 4.95 breakfast special". Yup, the breakfast was $ 4.95, but the coffee was $ $ 3. Oh well, the free bloody Mary at the cube bar was only $ 85.
Fireworks in Virgina City on the 4th were fantastic, but the traffic (for those poor souls trying to get back to Reno was terrible.
For anyone not familiar with Virginia City, there are about 700 year round residents, 15 bars, and live music in most of them... at least last weekend.
The Mark Twain Casino (the only one 24/7) has double double bonus that pays $ 100 for ANY four of a kind...and it did yesterday....about five times. I cannot for the life of me why I didn't get home with any of it.
Any questions about Virginia City? I'll try to post more as the trip progresses. Maybe we'll go down to the Peppermill and see John Wed or Thurs. Got that, John?
More Later.

I got it and I'm ready. It's been a long time since we emptied our wallets together. |

Okay, I have a question - you referred to the Mark Twain Casino as "the only one 24/7" - does that mean that other casinos in the area have opening and closing hours??? I can't see that one at all, no sirree. |

Yup...this is a small town and while it's only about 20 miles from the Peppermill, the other bars usually close when the crowd splits.
The Mark Twain has plenty of video poker and slots to keep most people broke, but the bars (and there are lots of them) do most of the late night business.
Big Brother and the Holding Company played at the recently re-opened Red Dog Saloon. This is the Saloon where Janis Joplin first played with Big Brother in the 60's.
Any other questions? |

As promised, JD called me on Wednesday and we met at the Peppermill, where we were separated from our money with surgical precision. At JD's suggestion, we headed to downtown Reno in his 15 passenger van. Yes, 15 passengers. It's longer than the average freight train. Our goal was not to fill it with hot, young women, but we could have, as will be explained later in this dissertation.
While downtown, we played at several casinos in order to pump up JD's points. It turned out to be a break even experience. Then off to one of two Reno traditions: the Nugget casino where we enjoyed an awful awful hamburger, which comes with about 40 pounds of fries. We left there with a hamburger for Emily. Oh, yes. Emily. Cute, funny, well constructed and dumb as a rock. We found her tending bar at ...
Shooters!
which was actually our first stop downtown, and was really the reason for leaving the Peppermill. JD had never experienced the place and needed to satisfy his curiosity. Being the consummate host, I eagerly fulfilled his wish with a warning that since it was still early, the Shooters madness probably hadn't started.
I was right. We were the only two customers in the place except for a female letter carrier (femailman). Yes, she took her break at Shooters. Now you know why your mail is always delivered halfway across town.
We remarked to Emily (remember Emily?) that we understood Shooters was a wild, exciting place, but we weren't seeing that. Eager to please, she showed us what wild was all about. Just as she was about to ...well, you know... about 10 rowdy bikers came in making lots of noise and bothering poor Emily. In her defense, I stood up to the biggest, meanest biker and was promptly knocked out. When I awoke about 5 minutes later, JD was neatly stacking the last of the unconscious bikers in the corner. Man, I wish I had been awake to see him in action.
Well, I have to do some work now (gotta have money to feed my cockatoos), so I'll tell you about the UNR womens volleyball team and JD's 15 passenger van later. It's a great story and every bit as truthful as the biker incident. |

It IS true we went to shooters. And it IS true Emily is...well...not an MIT Alum. In fact, when offered a choice between a TWO dollar bill tip, and a ONE dollar bill tip, she decided she'd prefer one that fit into a slot machine.
Next up for MY trip..."Bluegrass on the Comstock"

There's some real writing talent on this board. While I tune in for the comedic value, the fiction writing is reaching new levels.
Keep in comin'. |

I was thinking more about the time the Three Gay Caballeros stopped in and sat at the little table behind us as we downed our jello shooters. Wow, that was a night. John and BCD, you guys know how to empty a bar -- even one with NO STANDARDS like S--------.
Well, I had another big birthday with a round number today. Guess I'll now be banned from Shooters.
Fact is, I may be banned from breathing with this many years in the bank. |

John and Jerry, You guys are talking about the same night. The girls UNR volleyball team entertained John and I while Jerry had a nap. Then John got up on the bar and danced. After the stampede Jerry woke up and found the place empty except for the Caballeros. |
