The baseball folks are promising that 3 or 4 new eating and entertainment establishments will be ready in the Freighthouse district next to the ball park by the time baseball season gets here. For now, however, a couple new free standing restaurants are opening downtown to expand your dining choices.

A Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant called Pho Country 2 is open at 440 North Virginia St., across from the Silver Legacy ("2" because the owners also operate Pho Country in Carson City). I gave it a try recently and was quite satisfied. The food was good, portions generous and prices competitive. The server was very friendly, attentive and prompt, although it was not at all busy when I was there so this might not carry through to busier times. The place was clean but the decor was very plain and unimpressive. There were about a dozen 4 seater tables and 5 larger round tables with lazy susans for family style dining. There were at least 100 different items on the menu including soups, noodle dishes, Chinese items, side dishes and desserts. Lunch prices were $4 - $6, dinner entrees are mostly in the $5 - $9 range. Beer is available, but no other liquor. This joins (I think) two other pho style restaurants downtown and follows 2 or 3 others that opened and quickly closed in the last few years. Based on my first visit I am hoping these folks make a go of it.

The other restaurant, a Mexican eatery called Gringo's, is opening tomorrow on the Southwest corner of Sierra and West Second Street, next to the West Second Street Bar (for those whose navigation is based upon casinos, that's about a block west of the Cal Neva). Since it isn't open yet there isn't much information available about it. Considering how long it took them to get the restaurant built and open, however, I think I'll wait a bit longer before checking it out, just to be sure they have plenty of time to work the kinks out of the operation before I eat there.

Good Pho is very good. I'll have to give the new place a try. I had some at the place behind Circus Circus years back and that was quite good. It's the "Golden Flower" according to Google maps.

There's a Vietnamese noodle place here in the Bay Area - calls itself "iPho".
I deem it the best vietnamese noodle place name, ever.
Don't know about the food; around here, such places are a dime a dozen - when I come to Reno, I want "Nu Yalk" pizza, or some similarly location-specific vittles!
