Hi, hope everyone is doing well!
While attempting to organize my junk drawers (which actually resulted in dumping the contents of all three into one bigger one and letting it be a done deal - oh well, someday...), I came across some items in my collection from casinos past. Hey, anyone remember these?

I've got two old school Harvey's players cards - one of them is paper with the little holes in it....
Last night, The Dog and I were at a fundraiser thing and we pulled out our Sahara Las Vegas dice for our table fundraiser called Three Nopes for a Buck. |

Thanks for the pictures. I had some of those too, but I cleaned out my junk drawer already, and they are gone.
I forgot about the moto at the Fitz-
"Where downtown comes alive!"
Now we know why downtown has gone downhill. Bring back the Fitz. |

awesome casino souvenirs here! Hey, I have a dumb question for you all - (can you tell I've only been a gambler since 2003? haha) What is the significance of those punch holes on the players cards? Is that how they once tracked free play/comps maybe?

Several Casinos used the IBM punch card style card in the early days of tracking. I'm guessing the READERS on the slot machines capable of reading the encoded the players number were cheaper than magnetic strip readers at that time.
Kids....they probably don't remember Bancameriacards (before VISA or MASTER CARD) or the embossing of the info ON THE FRONT OF THE CARD on a carbon paper three part receipt (before there was a mag strip on the back).
The Silver Club in Sparks, Sundowner, and (oh...I forgot the Riverboat [hated the Riverboat] and Sands I see in the pics now) all had that IBM style. I seem to recall those early versions did not track in real time but something like once a day.
I should look for my old PAPER cards from JA Nugget, Comstock and Pioneer. Paper cards started for table games only in the beginning. Later, they had one person walk around the casino with a clipboard maybe once/hour noting the denomination of your machine and the time.
I think there were a lot of beefs about the accuracy of that system. |

Thanks for the info JD, I figured it was something along those lines!
You were mentioning the lady coming around with the clipboard once an hour, and my memory immediately got jogged - back when I was living in Florida and we only had the two casino cruise ships, this was their system - and what was the most oddball, is that they never did any monitoring of what you were doing on their end! They would always come up and ask you, "Hi, how long have you been playing on this machine?" You could tell them either 5 minutes, or the entire 6 hour cruise, and your free play was based on that calculation alone. So, after discovering this early on, naturally I'd watch where they were for a bit, and right when they were coming my way, I'd move to a $5 machine and tell them, "Oh, I've been on this $5 machine playing max bet for 3 hours and I'm losing my ass!" Yeah, I got alot of free play on those boats! haha

If we are going to stroll... let's get our money's worth with this photo essay from the UK Daily Mail.
You won't be sorry. I think I see JD in one of the pictures. |

YA...that's me. In the river...you can see my laptop sitting on the bank.
THAT UK Mail was a great set of pics....THANKS.
The pic of Gold Hill clearly shows the same road from Gold Hill to VC...in the upper left corner of that pic (from 1867) the ess curve is today called "Grinder's Bend" and has houses right up tight to the road. Too Cool.
About 2/3 of the way down, it showed OSullivan and a SAIL boat in the Truckee River...and this Caption:
"Sailing away: The Nettie, an expedition boat on the Truckee River, western Nevada, in 1867. This was the river that O'Sullivan almost died in and according to the magazine Harper's 'Being a swimmer of no ordinary power, he succeeded in reaching the shore... he was carried a hundred yards down the rapids...The sharp rocks...had so cut and bruised his body that he was glad to crawl into the brier tangle that fringed the river's brink.' He is also supposed to to have lost three hundred dollars worth of gold pieces during the accident too."
NOW IF I CAN JUST FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHERE THAT WAS..... |

Thanks Mjames for the awesome pics. Amazing detail and what a dedicated photographer!
JD, I had the same thought about those gold dollars on the bottom of the Truckee. I think we need to get together with few more VisitReno members and go Hip Wading with metal detectors in say Sept. or Oct. when the river's a it's lowest. |
