we left home @ 5am Monday mourning. i was going to recomend a nice little rest area in Hat Creek, very nice little creek lots of trees around but when we stopped there on the way back home I noticed a small sign near the restrooms of a chipmonk with a red circle and a slash thru it stating the rodents in the area have "The Plague" and to keep your pets on a leash and dont play with any dead rodents. Hmm never seen that one before, wish I had a phone that takes pictures.......Any way we arrived at border casino at about 2pm , 9hrs later, then a strange thing happened where it seemed like 10 minutes later we heading back home and it was the 9th,I dont believe in time travel but it sure felt like the past 3 days just flew by...Stayed at Harrahs east tower and the petstay room was better than expected.I think I may of spotted Tessa coming up the ramp right before Quiznos one evening but with our 2 dogs and one other small dogaround, she was talking so didnt have time to ask her pet if he was Mammouth....We gambled a bit the first night but mainly slots and did more exploring than anything. next day we made it to Cal Neva and ate at the Top Deck, biggest problem with he Top Deck was with the good food and the prices we didnt hardly eat anywhere else. lost a bit at the craps table there but the grandson hit a nice pot on pawnstars($200+) and seeing how this was his bday trip it really made his week.I thought the people at Cal Neva where all very friendly and helpful as they could tell we were new there.Played bingo there on Weds and got within 1 number twice but didnt win but for the price cant beat it(free to play 1 card then $3 for extras).Promised the wife I would take her to a show while in Reno,Only thing she could find was Menopause the Musical and thought no way aint going to happen ,not on my watch. We both laughed so hard thru the whole show ours sides were hurting.Thursday finally made it to the hash house and got embarrassed by a giant blueberry pecan pancake because I could not finish it,everyones food was excellent. played ultimated Texas Holdem for the first time, ended session down a bit but played a long time which is my goal.played alot of video poker and broke even ,Wife who never plays was watching me and thought she would give it a go put in $5 on a nickel machine and cashed out over $70 so she was stoked. All in all was a great trip ,thanks mainly to this forum for the recommendations, Cal Neva stretched our dollars the farthest. So thanks to all forum members who responded to my first thread,There are some forums that make Reno out to be filled with bums hitting up on you every where you go and the town is not very clean and people not very nice but we found just the opposite , maybe they are confusing it with that other town down south which I will not be returning to. Hope to be back in the fall. Thanks Everybody!!! Wynn |

Hi Wynn, thanks for the awesome trip report, and yes, it very well could've been Tessa and I that you saw! She often chooses to go up the ramp because that tile floor is really slick for her, and she highly resembles sliding around like a hockey puck on her trips outside. I remember saying hello to a nice couple in the elevator that had two dogs and mentioned a third, so maybe that was you all?
Regarding the plague signs, they seem to be popping up everywhere. I have a friend who is working at a campground in Tahoe that has a whole slew of them. There was also a hantavirus outbreak in the Yosemite area some time ago, so everyone is really being aware.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the Top Deck. Be sure to try the Casino Grille sometime, it's just as addicting (like the Hash House!)

Thanks for the trip report Mycran. It had been almost a month since we've had a post here. I don't think I'd be to comfortable either, at any park, with plague warning signs.
Glad you were treated well at the Cal Neva - they have a pretty good reputation. And I agree with you - the food and the prices are hard to beat.
I didn't know (but I'm not suprised) that the "Pawnstars" have a slot machine themed after them. Does Chumley have a few words of encouragement? How about the "Old Man?" Sounds like fun.
Glad to hear you enjoyed a show, had some great food and had a good time gambling. Sounds like you did the whole Reno thing. Too bad the time flies by so quickly. Hope you're able to make it back in the fall. |

Thanks for the TR. Glad you had a good time.
You're right about that "other" city in the Southern desert. We were there about a month ago and were glad to leave. $15 or higher minimum tables, shows were $100+ and crowds were shoulder to shoulder everywhere. It's the scene to see every once in a while but Reno is much more manageable.
And, regarding panhandlers, I've said it before and I'll say it again - anybody who complains about panhandlers in Reno has never been to San Francisco, where living out of a shopping cart has become a science. Street people can be a nuisance but Reno isn't unique in that regard, or even particularly bad. Heck, we went to the Shakespeare festival in Ashland, Oregon (a nice little town and a great event that I would recommend to anyone) and some of the first to greet us in the city park were panhandlers. Ignore them and enjoy the rest of what Reno has to offer. |

Great job! You've fulfilled our highest hopes. I especially like the bit about the wife who never plays anything getting the full-on first-timer good-luck experience; it's always such a joy to watch that happen.
Delighted to hear that you found the Cal-Neva as great as we're always saying it is; puts another feather in their cap, it does.
Thanks for the report; that oughta show those who think Reno and its discussion boards are "dead"... |

So glad to hear we have another Cal-Neva fan! Their Phat Philly at the Casino Grille is amazing... delightful! Just don't ask for a Coke - they only serve "cola".
Do try and head down to PM and Atlantis - they're both glitzy and are somewhat like Vegas in the style of the casino floor. The Dog and I never have any luck down there but they are fun to go see... and the Atlantis sometimes has an Elvis-lookalike singer in one of the lounges! |

Thanks, Lily, for recommending my lounge act at the Atlantis. As John and I age gracefully, I feel that I don't quite look as "Elvis-like" as I used to.
John or Stan will likely comment that I look more "Elf-like" than Elvis-like.
But the voice is still there, eh? (that "eh" is for you, BCDave). |

Yeah! You finally made it to Reno. I saw your Wizard of Vegas posts and hoping you'd make it out soon.
How was the Cal Neva bingo? Was there a lot of players and do they play it upstairs in one of their conference rooms? |
