|
|
As John has explained multiple times, the casinos just couldn't care less about the suggestions we mere visitors come up with, but in spite of that, here's my latest crazy scheme:
How about practice tables? If you've noticed, the casinos always have those free tutorial sessions for Blackjack, craps, and Roulette, but they are invariably held in the morning, and only the breeziest vacationers among us can actually show up for such a thing - but what if they had a table open at more convenient times with phony chips, where people could play, ask for recommendations when needed, but without having to sit through an instruction session, and could just practice playing until they felt comfortable enough to go to the real tables?
It might be a way to drum up some interest for non-slot games without having to resort to the loathsome "Super Single Deck 6:5" garbage, and whatnot, and having the table available at more favorable times of day or even night could attract more interest.
So having thought out this lovely idea, there must be some simple reason I've overlooked as to why it's actually a terrible idea, and won't work - so please let me know what it is.

Here's why they won't do it.
Cheap-ass slugs like me would sit and play free games while sucking down countless free Heinekens for about six hours a day.
Speaking of free Heinekens, don't forget to ask Jerry about last night when he gets back home. |

I don't think they would do it either, due to the fact that it would allow people who are hesitant to just stay there and play instead of getting engaged in the real thing. I would like to just sit there, win lots of fake chips and feel like a high roller even if they were worth nothing. It would give the illusion of being engaged, even when not. Then who would want to work at that table, no tips for dealers would about always be the case. And then the added congestion to the real gamblers from all these fake gamblers crowding into the casino, taking up valuable room.
No, I don't think it would be in my best interest as a gambler either. I want to know that people are there "for real" and not just because they have no place better to be, have no money, and really just want to be in the casino.
So, if they want to have something along those lines, they would just have a low limit table. But then you have the same problems because of the people that John mentions who are there just to get drunk on the cheap.
So my final word is that if folks want to learn, get some online software and give it a try at home. Casinos are a place where reality happens, and I don't think they deserve to be there if they are not willing to really do the dance with "Lady Luck". |

See, I knew there were practical reasons why it wouldn't work - but I still think that if I actually owned a downtown casino, I would give this strategy a try *just* to differentiate myself from the other casinos.
The free drinks would clearly not apply to the practice table, and as to the notion that people would just stay on it and not move to the real tables, I'd say that I expect some people to do so, but the value would come from those who would be inspired to actually bet real money.
Additionally, the practice table would not have to be available 24/7, but it should be around more often than those riduculous 11 am tutorials. If they had it between 4 and 7 pm for example, the cutoff might force the newly-awakened to go wager for real.
I agree, it's probably not viable, but given the dying nature of the downtown, I'd try almost anything at this point to attract attention to my casino (if I had one). |

The Crystal Bay Club on the North Shore used to have quarter craps on Wednesday nights for newbies. I tried it one night and got on a pretty hot roll. While I was betting my quarters, others were coming in and betting fairly significant amounts. It was a bit intimidating. They also used it as a training table for the new table crew.
I don't think they do it anymore, but it was fun.
