This was my first trip to Reno and unfortunately, or fortunately for my wallet, I was in town for business for a couple of days. I drove from my other business in Santa Cruz and made the 4+ hour drive. Being from Ohio, this roadie was incredible...the mountain views and rivers definitely made the drive fly by.
Hotel: Eldorado - I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. Though the rooms were small, they were clean and servicable. The wetbar was a nice feature and the bath rug was a nice touch. Room service was okay, but the buffet was excellent (especially at $5.99 for Gold Members). The service was good and I was checked in in 5 minutes...try that in Vegas!
Gaming: I found the gaming to be BETTER than Vegas. I like the variety of limits at the tables and it seemed there were always tables available for any game...with the exception of craps. Most only had one table, that people were squeezed around. The dealers were exceptionnally friendly and the poker room wait times were minimal. All I hear on this message board is how the slots are so tight...I didn't find this to be the case at all, I actually won on many of the slots and the ones I didn't seemed to keep me around for a while. I played $20 for 3 hours one night.
Nightlife: This is where I feel Reno is really lacking. Sure, some of the nightclubs in the casinos are okay. Some were downright boring (ie Brews Brothers). Yes, curiosity got the best of me and I went to Shooters. Yikes! There were 2 seventy year old dudes with a bartender that I was ready to pay not to go on the pole. Considering its location and proximity to the casinos, it could be much better. Other than that, there was very little to do at night other than gamble.
PROS: Very inexpensive lodging and food. Low-limit tables and plenty of tables. Friendly dealers. Great comps (I got comped $60 at the Eldorado where the Flamigo in Vegas comped me $1.75). No hookers in hotels.
CONS: Lack of nightlife / bars. Scary downtown at night. Some casinos (ie Cal Neva) need an update. |

I am glad that you have seen what we, all on this board, have known for a long time, Reno is for gambling. If you want the night life, lights, glitter, porn slappers, hookers and bad gaming odds go to Vegas. The El is not my favorite place but I did win my greatest amount on a slot machine there. As for updating, the CalNeva IMO can stay just as it is, I like the old feeling there, but then again I am old.

Wow, kinda makes me wonder why I have been going to Reno instead of Vegas. |

No, John, it's the porno birds at your place.
Hey, now that misterd51 has brought up the Old Genoa, we may have to check it out (with BCD of course) next trip. Then we can get it certified as a legit tourist trap the way we did with the dive, Shooters. |

Hey, now that misterd51 has brought up the Old Genoa, we may have to check it out (with BCD of course) next trip. Then we can get it certified as a legit tourist trap the way we did with the dive, Shooters.
We went to Shooter's twice this trip first was Tuesday night, had a good time. Two girls danced on the bar, one I think worked there and was fun to watch. The other a customer got up and danced she wasn't dressed as skimply but did some nice dancing. Wednesday we went out on the Levithan mine road into California on a old dirt rock road, we were going to go to the mine but changed our mine which is when we went to Genoa. Thursday we went back to Shooter's and it was entierly different dead with nothing going on and I am glad the ones there didn't dance. So like everywhere I guess a lot depends on timing and who is there.
As far as gambling lost at V.P at Boomtown coming up with slow cocktail service. Had lunch at Bonanza the cocktails were fast at the blackjack table but nearly non existance at the V.P. where i lost bad again. Thank goodnees after Shooters on Tuesday I went to Harrah's where I hit the crap table pretty well to make up most of it. Hit a couple money line parlays on NBA and Baseball, so cut my looses down. Along with the wife hitting a couple jackpots we were happy. The rest of my gambling was V.P. at the bar by the top deck in the Keno area. I broke even while consuming massives amounts of Budweiser. Over all had a great time and get to come back Fathers day for two nights.
Didn't mean to post my T.R. on to another but got carried away while responding to Jerry's post of Old Genoa and Shooter's being a dive. What other bars within walking distance outside the Casino's might be worth stopping in? I have seen the Wild Hickcock I think it is. Across from Harrah's by the pawn shops, but it didn't look interesting enough to stop in. _________________ misterd |

I think one large difference between Shooter's and Old Genoa Bar is that shooters is downtown for entertainment, while Old Genoa offers historic value. _________________ misterd |
