Right now Virginia St. is closed from Harrah's to the south half of the Eldorado. They are also starting to take down the Downtown Pavilion but that isn't interfering with traffic. |

Jeekers, what happened to all that peace and tranquility that was supposed to permeate after the completion of the train tunnel?
Why take anything down? Downtown should be much nicer these days, no?
I've really, really got to get back up there - it will have been a whole year in a few weeks. Gadzooks, what a terrible trip deficit! |

I assume the question is about taking down the Pavilion. This is not much more than a pole barn that was occasionally used for concerts, although it wasn't well suited for such events, and housed various vendors and other participants during some of the big special events. It will be replaced by a new ballroom/convention facility with food service capabilities and smaller breakout rooms that are needed for smaller conventions. It will be connected to the Events Center across the street so bigger conventions can use both buildings.
The street construction is to widen and upgrade the sidewalks while reducing the width of the street to one lane in each direction with a left turn lane in the middle. The idea is to make the area more attractive for pedestrian traffic, while leaving enough street room for the Hot August Night and Street Vibration parades. The narrower lanes are expected to encourage through traffic to avoid Virginia Street in favor of the one way streets to either side.
As for the train trench, the design for the plaza over the top is on the City Council's agenda today. The proposal for now is to cover only one block because the federal funds that had been intended for the project have been diverted to Hurricane Katrina relief. The rest of the plaza will have to wait until more money is found. The council is expected to award a contract to Granite Construction, but that hasn't been finalized yet. |
