Just getting ready to take off to Reno and I can't wait. Looking forward to basketball, beer, blackjack, craps (dice ) and more of the same. What is going on with the weather down there John it almost looks like shorts in the day time? I don't plan on being outside too much but that will be nice. I am not just posting to rub it in that I am going but I was also wondering what Video Poker machines you guys recommend? I don't do it much but I do enjoy it and I know from what you guys have said that some are better then others. I appreciate any tips or help.
Also Harrahs buffet any good? I don't plan on playing there but I have a coupon for the buffet and thought I would at least try it. I think I could possibly just keep rambling but I better get some rest. We leave on Thursday so I will check back before I go. Thanks in advance for your help! March Madness!

March Madness! Are you talking about your trip, or Basketball? Sounds like you got a plan. Video Poker? It sounds like you are not familiar with the different games, and have not studied strategy plays to me. So, if that is the case, I would recommend that you stick with some basic games such as: Jacks or better (draw poker), Bonus poker, or Deuces Wild. With these three games the proper holds are usually intuitive, and thus you should not lose much $$. There are many VP games to play, but many of them are much more volatile-you could hit it big....or lose it fast. Stick with the basic games at first.
Sorry, don't know a thing about Harrah's buffet, but I am sure you will find something to eat. |

Weather's beautiful, in the 70's and sunny. Almost like summer, but that's subject to change. Reno's weather is notoriously sneaky.
As far as VP machines, check the paytables. The best are 9-6 (pays 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush), most are 8-5, and an occasional 10-6. Don't play anything worse than 8-5, but look for 9-6. Most casinos have various paytables, and I have no idea why. Maybe to satisfy knowledgeable players while cheating the others? |

This morning's forecast had the 70's (and even an 80 or two) holding at least through the weekend. Not so great for skiers, great for everyone else.
In addition to the 9-6 payout, check what you get for a royal flush. Full pay jacks or better should return 4000 credits for a royal with 5 credits bet. That is a bonus payoff that makes it worth playing the 5 credits for that one time in 40,000 that you get a royal. Some 9-6 machines short-pay on the royal.
You will find full pay 9-6 games at the Club Cal Neva, upstairs near the sports book (since you will be watching the games anyway), along the side where the race book is located, in denominations from nickels up, and also at the Peppermill from quarters and up. There are probably others around town but these are the locations I know for sure.
Some 8-5 machines can also be considered full pay if they have a progressive jackpot for the royal flush that gets high enough.
All of these odds are for "the long run," which is tens of thousands, if not millions, of hands. If you're just dabbling in a little video poker between halves of the basketball game, the odds won't matter much, but I would still say bet the 5 credits just in case you hit a royal flush.
