|
|
Okay, I admit it: I am a compulsive planner. For my upcoming trip in November (a mere 142 days, 19 hours from now), I will again find myself alone in Reno on a Saturday night prior to my buddy's arrival Sunday afternoon or evening. As usual, we have a condo reserved on the North Shore for Sunday through Saturday.
That leaves me with the need for a inexpensive room for one night. (Last year I splurged and stayed at the Grand Sierra.) This year, money is a bit tighter so I have been checking lower cost options. The two that I am considering are the Atlantis Motor Lodge (which can be had for $78 +tax) or the Super 8 Meadow Wood Courtyard (which can be had for under $55, including tax). I have never stayed at either place, so have no first hand experience.
I will not be spending much time in the room and will have a car. If the past is a predictor, I will spend most of Saturday evening and night frequenting the third-tier of casinos (Bonanza, Western Village, Baldini's), with a couple of hours spent downtown at the Cal-Neva and adjoining properties. In other words, the fact that the Atlantis has a casino and the Super 8 does not is not a deciding factor.
For those of you familiar with the properties: Is the Atlantis room worth the extra $25? The Super 8 lists high-speed Internet access as one of the amenities; the Atlantis does not mention HSI. Does anyone know if HSI is available at the Atlantis?
Finally, are there any other "gems" that might be in the same price range that are nice and you could recommend? I am open to suggestions and have not made any non-cancellable reservations yet.
Thanks in advance,

I arrive Saturday, Nov. 3 at noon, and will head for the North Shore as soon as my friend arrives, either Sunday afternoon or evening. (He hasn't gotten his flight info yet).

Hey Larry,
Just my two cents...when I was at the Atlantis on my January trip, I walked right by the motor lodge and it didn't look half bad. From some of the reviews I've seen of it, lots of people say stay away but I guess you'll get that anywhere. Now, on the other hand, it definitely didn't look like it was worth $78...
Have you investigated the Sands? Just wondering because I've never paid more than $29 to stay there, even on a weekend. Since Terrible's bought them, I've been receiving what I call the "No Particular Month, Time or Date" offers...you just call their toll-free number, mention the rate code, and get the room...that's it...no player's club membership or coupon with your name on it necessary. (They do include a personalized voucher for $10 in free play but that's the only personalized part about it). The current one I have for April to June is to call 1-866-FUN-STAY and mention rate code SPRT207 and this was also the same rate code for January through March, so maybe it's a permanent thing? Only thing I'm not sure about is the internet access. If you can deal without it (and sometimes a rather springy bed), it's a steal!

Floridagambler: I actually tried to reserve the Sands first; however, they said they didn't allow Saturday arrivals. Also, the rate they quoted (before realizing I had asked for a Saturday arrival) was about $62. That's certainly not a deal-killer, but the no Saturday arrival is.
Thanks for the info on the Atlantis. I will keep it in mind as I make my decision.

I am showing Fitzgeralds for $52 and Circus for $65. I have stayed in the Atlantis lodge, and it was fine, although I do think that price is high. The good thing about Atlantis, is the pool. Celebrity is also less expensive, downtown, and has an indoor pool. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I just checked the Fitz and the web site says "One Night Saturday Arrivals not Allowed" when I plug in my dates. I don't know why, but Circus-Circus doesn't interest me. I stayed there once, about 12 years ago, and was not overly impressed.
I went to some of the travel services a few days ago and found that Celebrity had horrible reviews, for visits as recent as earlier this year. Several of the people leaving reviews mentioned safety issues.
I wish the Fitz would let me do a Saturday check-in. I would enjoy staying there, just to say that I have.

Bummer. I never have understood that Saturday thing. The hotel I work in tried it for a couple of months, and we were empty on Sat nights, when we used to be sold out. Put a stop to that pretty quickly.
Really though, Atlantis is fine. The room was clean and the beds were in good shape. Only downside was that it looked like the door had been kicked in a few times. Never felt unsafe or anything. |

You might also check out lastminutetravel dot com. They show Sands available for Sat arrival for $69 with tax included. Having stayed in both a Sands regular, and Atlantis lodge room, I would definately opt for Sands. |

Thanks! I will check it out. I had one other agency (tripres.com, I believe) that showed a Saturday-only availability, but when I reserved through them, they contacted me and said Saturday arrivals were not allowed by the Sands.
It's worth a try, though, so I'll check it out.
Thanks again for the recommendation and the comparison of the two locations.

I just booked the Sands at a total cost of $69.99 through lastminute travel. Thanks for recommending it.
As mentioned before, I had also booked the Sands through another agency earlier. They called a few days later to tell me they couldn't honor a Saturday only stay because of the Sands' policy. So, before I start celebrating my luck, I'll wait a few days to see if I get the same message from lastminute.
Again, thanks for the suggestion.

I still haven't heard back from them, so I'm guessing it worked. Thanks again for the referral!
