I recently signed up in Reno for what is essentially a line pass through the security checkpoint at some airports. The promoters of the system work under contract with TSA. After passing a background and criminal check and submitting fingerprints and a retinal scan, you are issued a "smart card" to use at the airport. You do not have to wait in the normal line to get through security.

I used it for the first time recently, and it was great. There was a long line at an airport. I bypassed the line, going directly to the rtgo screening machine. It verified my identity in less than two seconds. I was then put at the front of the line to go through the regular TSA screening process.

It's $100 per year; well worth it if you frequently use an airport(s) on the list. Both rtgo and a competitor are in the process of enlisting additional airports. I'm sure eventually most major airports will be part of it. Under the TSA rules, when an airport signs on with rtgo or the other company (I don't remember its name), it is obligated to accept both systems.

It eliminates variance in security checkpoint waiting time, thus increasing the productive hours of a trip. No need to allow extra unproductive time for the risk of long lines at airport security.

The downside of it is giving your fingerprints and retinal scan to a governmental agency. In my case, my fingerprints have long been in the government's possession because of an occupational license I held long ago. Those who have never been fingerprinted might feel differently.
