|

I just noticed yesterday that the food court at the Pepp has closed. There was no activity whatsoever taking place, but a sign promised a new dining option coming "soon." No indication as to what it's going to be. Maybe I'll check their web site for clues. |

The little food court was one of my favorites for a quick free meal. Sorry to see it go.

No, it wsn't great, but it was possible to find something decent to eat at a reasonable price (the chinese food was usually well prepared). I think it's part of the Peppermill getting rid of all bargains. They want to be the Las Vegas of the North. It remains to be seen if they can charge LV prices and attract enough people to stay and eat there, and it does seem they need more customers.
I bet they replace the food court with something more expensive. Now the only deals left are in the coffeeshop ($5.99 all night breakfast specials and $5.99 2-5 chinese lunch specials which aren't on the menu, and the $5.95 comfort food menu available Monday thru Friday). The sports deli also has some affordable food, but it's not so great either.
During my recent stay, I found myself going to El Pollo Loco quite a bit. It's just a few blocks north on Virginia St. It's actually pretty good, and the price is right. Not quite as convenient as the food court (if you're staying at the Pep) but significantly better than its taco section. _________________ Everyone knows it's unlucky to be superstitious! |

Everytime I tried that dump, I ended up paying 10 bucks for some crappy food (which would have been better and cheaper at the cafe)
I am glad it is closed!!!!
Pep, needs a good mexican restaurant along with a great tequila bar!!! |

In my post, I mentioned it as a place for quick FREE food. It never occurred to me to PAY for the food there, or anywhere else in Reno.

Well, Barb will certainly like it!
Will this be the type of barbecue restaurant where everyone wears oversized plastic bibs, and great buckets of ribs are produced for people to grab from? Will baskets of popcorn complement the baskets of breadsticks, only to be inadvertently yet inexorably rained down on the floor, confetti-like, in the style of the old "Ground Round" chain?
Will there be a huge rack/pit/campfire-style cooking area in the center of the restaurant, with flames leaping up high off long-scarred grills?
Or will it be slightly more subdued than this? |

nice stan. I certainly hope its a little more subdued then what you suggested. For some reason i can't see the Pep going trashy on this one. |

You know, I thought I wasn't being facetious, but on subsequent inspection, I can see how that mini-rant might come across as snarky - but I will tell you, when I was in China last year, the hot new restaurant trend was BBQ-skewer-type places, where great slabs of meat are brought to your table, and slices carved right on to your plate. The decor at the one I was introduced to was quasi-European, and the place was supposedly "Brazilian", though the liederhosen and such on the almost comically-garbed waitstaff evoked a pastiche of regions.
The beer was brewed on site, and delivered in large, German-style mugs, and was very good.
TV screens throughout the restaurant were showing a collection of old Tom and Jerry cartoons. There were even additional screens placed over the urinals in the men's room, so that you wouldn't miss a moment of America's favorite cat-and-mouse team.
Not to say that the Pep is about to go anywhere in this direction, but the whole thing had that same air of suspended reality that one tends to encounter in the more charismatic casinos.
I'll have my bib laundered. |
