I'm new to the board. I will be in Reno for business in November. I have a choice of Harrah's or the Atlantis. Which place is the better place to stay at all things being equal?
Also, Where are the good places to eat there these days. I have not been to Reno in quite a few years.
Thanks. |

A good friend of mine and his girlfriend just returned from Reno. They stayed at Harrah's and were treated well. They have very favorable things to say about several of the restaurants there. I know from experience that their buffet has much improved.
Harrah's is very close to other casinos downtown. That's a big plus for me as I like to wander around. Also, there's just ton's of good food to be had in dowtown Reno.
Tha Atlantis is a pretty cool place but it's main competitor, the Peppermill, is really cool. It's about a fifteen minute walk from one to the other. Both are over two miles from the downtown core. Atlantis restaurants: Toucan Charlie's buffet is supposed to be very good. The Seafood in the atrium bridge over Virginia street has a loyal following. And I can testify that the food in their coffee shop is good and the portions are generous.
Have a good time! |

I think it all comes down to what kind of "vibe" you want for this business trip. Basically, downtown is a little "skuzzy/dirty", you'll see strange people and get panhandled. It's safe though.
Atlantis is everything nice, including their restaurants. Check out the Oyster bar on the skywalk for both sushi and fresh seafood.
Not that you can't have both. Stay at Atlantis, walk out the front, take a cab for about $10, or a bus for a buck (is it still a buck?) straight down Virginia to downtown. Simple.
So what you have to ask yourself is what kind of guy are you? For a trip to New Orleans (of past years) would you have stayed in the French Quarter? or one of the new hotels by the convention center? |

I'd concur that the distinction has to do with whether or not you can stand to see anything disagreeable - the downtown has the scuz/sleaze factor, with the panhandlers and all - if you want to see only hotel and resort niceness, the Atlantis is your place; but if you don't mind the downtown feel, with its accompanying human detritus, you get expanded options for strolling around, other restaurants, casino action, and all.
But the Atlantis also has a nice indoor pool, if that's any sort of consideration; I don't know what Harrah's has. And I did like the Atlantis buffet, though I only had it for breakfast, but they had a good selection of fresh fruit, which is a classy touch. |

Well your right, I wasn't watching where I was stepping...but that's because I was trying to look away from the spectacle of some dapper bare chested dude with a severe nipple twitch parading down Virginia street. |

Thanks for the... umm... interesting responses. I remember downtown being a bit seedy. |

As you can see, threads on this message board can quickly descend into a kind of depravity not seen since...well, last night in a casino.
But they serve a purpose: They give you a pretty good idea of what awaits you downtown! |

I'm taking estrogen drugs but they just ain't doin' the job.
However, I do fit in with the "seedy downtown image" we have alluded to.
I hope to steal another avatar soon. Do you think the one alison had a few months ago would be appropriate?
No, forget it.
Checking out now. I have to go "scratch". |

So...I've decided to stay at the Atlantis since most of my biz will be at the convention center. I will however venture up to downtown.
Is there anyone here who can tell me if Rapscallions is still good? Is there better? |

I hope you're getting a reasonable rate - every time I've checked prices at the Atlantis during a convention, terrifying numbers with three digits pop up - the situation's probably even worse, now that they'll have an ultra-convenient walkway between the hotel and the convention center.
Of course, if it's business, and the company's paying, then that's the way to go!

The company is picking it up, and it is in the three digit range...for them, LOL. Hopefully there will be snow in Tahoe when I get there. |
